Florida? I'm afraid that is a bad idea. Moving to any state that the good Lord is obviously trying to wipe off the map via CAT5 Hurricanes, is never a good idea. Unless of course you don't mind rebuilding every few years.
Ok, I don't want to use K's blog as a forum of debate, but I have to respond to Buke's ignorant comment about FL.
1. Look at the history, yes, FL gets hit by Hurricanes. However, it has been almost 2 decades since we got hit with a cat 5 storm. Furthermore, GA, SC, and TX get hit with more hurricanes at greater frequency than FL. I also would like to point out that Northeast states like MA and NY have been known to get hit with hurricanes as well. Plus, when a hurricance makes that far north, it is almost certain to be a cat 4 or cat 5 because only a strong storm would be able to make it that far north of the tropics. For more info on that, read the book, "The Perfect Storm" which was about the Hurricane, not the movie.
2. Even if a Hurricane does hit FL, it still does not mean you will rebuild. FL is in the top 10 as far as land mass. The chances of a Hurricane hitting your home is rare, but hitting more than once and destroying it is even rarer. Even the year when we had 5 Hurricanes, not a single 1 hit the same place twice. Meaning, that if you rebuilt from the 1st hurricane, you didn't get hit by the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th one that hit us that year.
3. FL and CA have the strictest building codes in the whole country. Yes, these code make home prices higher than the rest of the country, however, they have also made them safer. Whenever you have seen a home destroyed in FL as a result of a hurricane it is because that house was built before 1992 i.e. not using the new strict building codes or they are mobile homes which just aren't safe no matter where you live.
4. Most damage from hurricanes happen after the storm, i.e. flooding, down power lines, debris, etc. However, since we live at sea level and close to the ocean, many communities have developed to accomodate for flooding. Same can't be said about other states especially in the midwest and and Northeast (where many people were force to evacuate there homes due to flooding last year and this year.)
5. More often than not, we have ample warning when a Hurricane is approaching. We have evacuations and preparations down to a science. Personally I would rather live in a place where I can prepare for a disaster as oppose to place where disaters may strike without warning (i.e. earthquakes and tornadoes.)
So, if you don't move to FL, please base your decision on a logical reason such as overcrowding, poor education standards, lack of infrastructure, too many immigrants or old people. Don't base it on the baseless, irrational argument made by Bukes that does nothing more than perpetuate stupid urban legends.

K,
Look at me when I'm talking to you. Jeesh, what's the point of having an alter ego MySpace if you don't use it?

Forget it Bukes, I think she found satisfaction in her other life. We're left to fend for ourselves.
